Wishing you a great week ahead, Sumbella 1. Member Only Article:Why to focus on skills vs a job title (and key considerations for doing so)[Excerpt] At some point in my career as a teacher, I'd wanted to pivot or branch out of teaching in a mainstream or institutional setting. In this article I outline why my reliance on skills and building up a body of work to evidence skills is the single most important thing I've done to help with career pivots like these. One of the roles I wanted was as a market development editor, or just to work in publishing in general. And one of the ways I believe helped me make the pivot from teaching into publishing was having evidenced skills in writing and editing. These skills are ones I could refer to during interviews for roles that I was otherwise not familiar with having worked solely as a teacher prior to that. It is so important to feel fulfillment and competency in the work you do, no matter what you choose. The more of us can find this in our work, the better! Of course, perhaps you, like me, have also seen people be given job titles that are a mismatch with what they can actually do. The incompetency can be jarring and difficult to work with. Yet if you are someone who is building skills... Skills become a bit like fitness. Skills can't be faked. You can either run the mile easily, or you can't. You either have the skills, or you don't. Not like a job title, which can potentially be made up. The three core skills I chose to focus on a few years agoSo to help give an idea of how this plays out in a career strategy, here are the 3 core skills I chose to focus on developing over the last 3-5 years... β

Greetings Reader, Hope the week is off to a good start. Your usual bundle of good things going on and nuggets to ponder on is here. This week, I am excited to have opened the Mandarin hobby course, starting next month. There are all kinds of methods behind my madness of scheduling this in the middle of a busy term. The biggest reason is that I know hobbies are one of the first things to slip during the busiest times of year for teachers. Having something fun scheduled in means you can look...
21.03.25 "Despite the forecast, live like it's spring." - Lilly Pulitzer Well, hello! Firstly, happy nowroz (Spring equinox). As you can see in the photo above, the apple tree in my garden is in now in full bloom and it is absolutely making everything feel very lovely. I've decided this week to post a full article in this newsletter for you. It's not published elsewhere and I put it in full in this letter so that you don't have to click and go somewhere else to read. The usual roundup of...
14.3.25 I hope March has been good for you so far. It's been a time of reflection and introspection here for me in Chitral. Some have gently prodded me to say that they haven't received an email in a while - and I'm glad they did. It's a foundational part of keeping in touch with you as someone who has shown interest in the work we are doing at Well Teachers on personal development and wellbeing. While most of my energy and focus has been on the members of The Well recently, I am working to...
